History of Shrek: Everyone’s favorite green ogre Shrek debuted in 2001 as a computer animated comedy movie. The movie, based on William Steig’s 1990 fairy tale book Shrek! starred famous voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz.
The film’s primary character, Shrek, is a large, strong, solitude-loving, Scottish sounding orgre. Shrek and his pal the talking donkey “Donkey” voiced by Eddie Murphy set out to find Princess Fiona and rescue her from the highest room in the tallest tower of a castle so that Fiona, voiced by Cameron Diaz, can return to Duloc and marry the tyrannous Lord Farquaad voiced by John Lithgow.
En route to Duloc, after being rescued by Donkey and Shrek, Princess Fiona falls in love with Shrek. Only on the last night of their journey does Shrek realize how much he loves Fiona but fears that she will not love him due to his ogre appearance. Finally he goes to profess his love and overhears Fiona talking to Donkey about Fiona’s horrible secret – at night fall every night she transforms into an ogre. When discussing the ugly beast she turns into, Shrek overhears and thinks she is referencing him and believes she would never love him.
Once Fiona gets taken to Duloc, Donkey tells Shrek of the misunderstanding and they run off to rescue the Princess from getting married!
Two movies have followed Shrek: Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. Each movie has been a success for DreamWorks and even a holiday movie has been produced. There is a rumor of a fourth Shrek movie in the works and if it is like all the others, it will be a treat the whole family can enjoy.
