On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britain and Democracy was born. Americans celebrate that 4th of July with that freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings. The Declaration of independence states, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Every Fourth of July we celebrate our freedom from the oppression of the British King. Our founding forefathers rose up against undue taxation and quartering of British soldiers. They stripped of the rights to defend themselves in any British court so they fought. In the years leading to the American Revolution the British were sending thousand of soldiers to hunt down and destroy rebellious colonist. In April 18 1775 Paul Revere and William Dawes are sent from Boston to warn colonists. Revere reaches Lexington about midnight and warns Sam Adams and John Hancock who are in hiding. April 23, 1775, The Provincial Congress in Massachusetts orders 13,600 American soldiers to be mobilized. Colonial volunteers from all over New England assemble and head for Boston, then establish camps around the city and begin a year long siege of British-held Boston.
